Ambergris Caye (pronounced “key”) is the largest island in Belize and a popular destination for both international and domestic tourists. The capital, San Pedro, is famous for its luxury resorts, beautiful beaches, and festive, relaxed atmosphere. While some cars exist on the island, tourists and locals usually prefer to get around by bicycle or golf cart. San Pedro is also known for its eclectic mix of restaurants serving up everything fresh caught seafood, spicy Mexican food, local Belizean delicacies and gourmet fare. There are plenty of cafes and other amenities located in the town, including souvenir shops and places to buy local art and handicrafts.
The nearby Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world, is a popular attraction thanks to its stunning vistas, unparalleled diving and snorkeling opportunities, and rich abundance of fish and other marine life. The famous “Shark Ray Alley”, a natural cut in the coral, is a popular destination for divers and snorkelers who can take advantage of the shallow waters, bright white sandy sea bottom and lack of commercial fishing activity to see thousands of sharks, rays, barracuda, eels, spider crabs, sea turtles, and parrot fish.
The coast of Ambergris Caye is also an excellent place to partake in water sports like kayaking and windsurfing while the beautiful beaches are an excellent place to comb for treasures, take a romantic stroll, or enjoy an intimate picnic for two.
