When it comes to an island with huge personality and character, Ambergris Caye is among the top ten islands in the world. Can you picture men in drag, dancing in the streets? How about endless lobster prepared in every way possible? Or being front row to the most anticipated International pageant in the country? These are all the elements that make up anticipated events scheduled to take place in the first six months of 2020, making it an ideal period to travel to Belize! Here’s a look at the 3 biggest festivals on Ambergris Caye!

February –El Gran Carnival de San Pedro

February might be marked as the month for romance but travelers to Ambergris Caye will quickly find that El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro takes precedence over any other event on the island (even the lovey-mushy stuff). This year, the long-standing island tradition will kick off from Feb 22nd to 25th and is usually celebrated to signal the start of the Lenten season. While the carnival is centered on a character named Juan Carnaval, history suggests that Juan was a rich man who loved to party and was known for breaking hearts of women he came across, with whom he had several children. Picture groups of men dressed in drag and twirling their stuff in circles as they recite poems and songs? Men in six inch heels chanting humorous song lyrics? Seems kind of odd doesn’t it? For most, this part of the tradition is the most entertaining and exciting. Island men from all ages dress the part with wigs in tow and put on a show for street spectators in the principal streets of San Pedro Town. Since last year, the comparsas segment have been made a tribute to island activist, Feliz Ayuso, who was a major contributor in keeping the tradition alive.

San Pedro Lobsterfest –

June 15th is the official opening of the Caribbean Spiny Lobster season in Belize and the occasion is marked with huge parties at major tourist destinations, to celebrate the tasty shellfish and signal the start of summer. The date set for this year’s San Pedro’s gastronomic celebration if from June 11th to 20th. Most adventuring loving tourists travel to Ambergris Caye since airfares are generally low, accommodations cheaper and the weather divine.

The committee has organized several lobster themed activities during this ten day period; the annual Lionfish hunt from June 11th to 14th, while the lobster crawl from 15th to 19th and finally culminating with one of the islands biggest block party on June 20th. You don’t want to miss this year’s gastronomic events in San Pedro, Caye Caulker or Placencia!

International Costa Maya Festival

Another much anticipated event this year is the International Costa Maya festival is which set for July 31st to August 2nd. This multicultural event highlights beauty, diverse backgrounds, culture, music, and food in a whole-some three-day/3-night celebration. This year will be the 28th edition since its inception in 1991.
