Three of the most popular gastronomical summer events in Belize kicks off when the official lobster season opens in June – the San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia Lobsterfests! Organizers claim there will be big lobster and even bigger fun so save the dates for a triple dose of ‘lobsta fi dayz”; June 15 to 23rd (San Pedro, Ambergris Caye); June 22nd to 24th (Placencia) and culminates on June 29th to July 1st in Caye Caulker. There is so much lobster available during these events that prices for this treat are at their lowest.
What to expect? – Lively entertainment, tons of yummy Lobster and a bevy of tasty libations! Each festival is unique but will have the same concept; there will be plenty of outdoor food booths that will be offering the lobster in every way imaginable, from lobster on the grill, to lobster thermidor, to lobster ceviche, kebabs, Lobster ice cream and even lobster chowder, just to name a few.
What NOT to miss? At the San Pedro Lobsterfest, be sure to look out for the Ambergris Caye Rotary Club’s fundraiser called “Chairs for Charity”. As its name implies, festival goers wanting to skip the long lines during the Block Party could pre-purchase tickets which give them access to escorted seating at tables, booth vendor menus, bar access, portable toilets inside the area, and wrist bracelets for easy exit and re-entry.
*Pier 366’s Booth – With fan favorites such as lobster fritters, lobster-stuffed jalapenos, grilled curry lobster and lobster spring rolls, Pier’s Booth is sure to delight and satisfy your every lobster craving.
*The Split in Caye Caulker – when the festival rolls in La Isla Cariniosa, be sure to hit up the strip at the north end of the island and try some classic recipes like grilled lobster served with melted butter and cool off with a green concoction called “lizzad jooce” at the Lazy Lizard Bar.
*Placencia – More than 50 booths will be set up to serve cold drinks, other kinds of seafood, sell artwork, handicrafts, games, and face painting for kids of all ages. And everyone will be dancing thanks to plenty of live acts performing a variety of musical styles.
Where to stay? – Over the past decade, the festival has evolved into a 10 day festival filled with plenty of great activities and incredible lobster themed foods so you will need to plan on securing accommodations.
