Belize City, as the country’s largest urban area and former capital, is the primary transportation hub for the entire nation. All international commercial flights into Belize land at Philip Goldson International Airport about nine miles north of the city limits of Belize City.
From Belize City, travelers have a number of different options when it comes to getting to San Pedro, the capital of the island of Ambergris Caye. Both of Belize’s domestic air carriers, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, offer regular connections between Philip Goldson and San Pedro. Check the airline’s websites for exact scheduling information but usually there are multiple flights per day connecting the two cities starting at 7:30 am with the last flight around 5:30 pm.
Some flights between San Pedro and Belize City go through the Belize City Municipal Airport. The best way to get between the Municipal Airport and Philip Goldson is by taxi and the journey should take 20 minutes or less. On some occasions, flights departing Philip Goldson will land at Belize City Municipal Airport to take on additional passengers before departing to San Pedro.
Generally speaking, flights departing the Municipal Airport are significantly cheaper than those departing Philip Goldson although special fares and availability play a significant role in determining the final cost.
Flights between Belize City and San Pedro take about 20 minutes.
It is possible to take a boat from Belize City directly to San Pedro. The journey lasts approximately 75 minutes. There are no commercially scheduled operators so visitors will have to make arrangements in advance with a private operator or proceed directly to the Water Taxi Terminal in Belize City and make arrangements upon arrival. Some boats stop at Caye Caulker and St. George’s Caye en route to Ambergris Caye.
