Snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve
Mayan for “little channel”, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a community-founded initiative consisting of three square miles of underwater coral reef beauty. Located along the southern tip of the world famous Ambergris Caye and only ten minutes from San Pedro Town, Hol Chan is Belize’s oldest marine reserve. Tourists from the world over come here to snorkel and scuba dive.
Probably the most popular zone in Hol Chan is Shark Ray Alley. For years, fishermen would clean their catches along this strip of the Caribbean just 15 minutes from San Pedro Town. This then attracted nearby nurse sharks and stingrays. With a depth of only 30 feet and crystal clear waters, Zone D, as it is otherwise known, has proven to be a great location for beginning divers. Apart from the rays and sharks, barracuda, parrot fish, snappers, lobsters, crabs, eels and all other reef critters have made the area their home.If you’re ready to experience the magnificence of the world’s second largest reef first hand, The Villas at Banyan Bay is your answer. Equipped to arrange a tour through this pristine marine reserve, scuba diving or snorkeling this ecological wonderland is an absolute must when in Belize.
