A Short Guide to Ambergris Caye and San Pedro

The largest island in Belize, Ambergris Caye is 25 miles long and no more than a mile wide. At the south end is the island’s capital, San Pedro, the Spanish form of Saint Peter, and the inspiration for the 1986 Madonna Hit “La Isla Bonita.” Ambergris Caye is popular with visitors due to its close proximity to the Belize Barrier Reef, its relaxed atmosphere where most people get around by bicycle or golf cart, and the wide array of luxury resorts, excellent restaurants, bars, and cafes.

Although the island is one of the most popular visitor destinations in the country, it remains a laid-back place with no skyscrapers, urban congestion or heavy car traffic. Locals say that once a person visits Ambergris Caye, they’ll want to keep returning over and over again because every single visitor is made to feel welcome and right at home. Populated by English-speaking locals and a large segment of expats from North America, international visitors have no trouble immediately adapting to the easygoing vibe that permeates the island.

The beaches are beautiful enough to satisfy any vacationer but there are plenty of activities for more adventurous travelers.
