There are few pleasures that can compare to riding an inner tube down a placid river in Belize on a warm, sunny day. But while many rivers around the world offer tubing, only in Belize can you experience the wonder of being gently whisked through a series of impressive caves all while you relax and watch the scenery unfold from the comfort of an inner tube.
The Caves Branch River in Belize starts underground and then rises to the surface in the middle of a pristine rainforest. From there, participants can climb aboard inner tubes to begin a truly special adventure, slowly floating around bends until reaching a labyrinth of caves replete with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
The ancient Maya believed that caves were sacred places that connected the above ground world of humans to the underworld of the gods. Tubing down the Caves Branch River passes through some of these sacred cave sites that still have carvings, artifacts, and items left behind by the ancient priests.
Perhaps the oldest natural “amusement park” ride in the world, tubing down the Caves Branch River starts in the bright sunlight, passing lush foliage and an abundance of wildlife on the banks of the river before plunging into the inky cool depths of a cave. The “ride” continues when the river once again makes its way out to the surface for a brief respite before plunging into another cave. With hundreds of miles of caves in the area, archeologists have only begun to explore the labyrinthine tunnels that played such an important role in the ancient Maya religion.
