Garifuna Settlement Day Celebrated in Belize

Belize Garifuna Settlement Day Celebration 2015! Garifuna Settlement Day is the celebration of when the first Garifuna arrived in Belize in 1832 by a dory. They are descendants of Black Caribbeans who were first deported in 1797 from St Vincent. Every year on November 19th, this event is celebrated and showcases their unique culture with a staged arrival by the first settlers. Included in the celebration are parades, live music, dancing, mass, and the election of Miss Garifuna. The celebration is held throughout Belize, but especially in Dangriga, which is their spiritual home, and in Punta Gorda and Hopkins. The flag, a mixture of yellow, black, and white is raised in all parts of Belize. The yellow represents the sun, the black represents the color of the people, and the white represents peace. To this day, the Garifuna language is still spoken in Belize and has been declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Photo credit: www.belizeambassador.com
