Legal Requirements for Getting Married in Belize

If you want to get married in Belize, the good news is that marriages in Belize are legally recognized everywhere around the world, including the United States. All weddings are performed in English and the resort will handle the paperwork to get your marriage license. Once the paperwork in Belize is complete, you won’t have to do anything else for it to be valid in your home country.

Note: Belize law requires that the wedding couple must be in the country three business days before the ceremony in order to apply for the license. If you can’t make this deadline, contact us and we will expedite the licensing procedure for an additional fee.

If neither member of the wedding couple has been married before, you’ll need:

  • A Belizean marriage license application form notarized by a local Justice of the Peace; and
  • A photocopy of both passports showing both the ID photo and the date of entry into Belize.

If one or both members of the wedding couple are divorced, you’ll need:

  • A Belizean marriage license application form notarized by a local Justice of the Peace; and
  • A photocopy of both passports showing both the ID photo and the date of entry into Belize; and
  • Original certified divorce decree(s).

If one or both members of the party are a widow/er, you’ll need:

  • Original death certificate(s); and
  • A Belizean marriage license application form notarized by a local Justice of the Peace; and
  • A photocopy of both passports showing both the ID photo and the date of entry into Belize.
