For the second year in a row, the island of Ambergris Caye has been named as a Leading Destination in the Mexico and Central America category at the World Travel Awards held on July 1, in Lima, Peru.
“This is a hugely important moment for the country,” said Karen Bevans, the Director of Tourism for the Belize Tourism Board. “For the second year in a row, Belize has been recognized despite incredible competition from bigger destinations in the region. The award is proof positive of all of the hard work put in by Belizeans who are involved directly or indirectly in the tourism industry. Everyone in the country has served with distinction as a cultural ambassador because the most important part of any visitor’s experience is when they interact with people. This is a huge win for Belize and the Belize Tourism Board sincerely congratulates every Belizean for the outstanding work that we have been doing to promote our country as a top level tourism destination.”
An advisory committee of more than 2,700 travel publications and leading tourism service and hospitality providers selected this year’s nominees for the prestigious World Travel Awards. After the short list of nominees was published, the global tourism industry, in combination with active personal travelers, were then asked to select their favorite choices for each category. World Travel Awards rules limit each participant to one vote for each category, with the winner being declared based on the destination or service that garnered the most votes.
The World Travel Awards began in 1993 in order to promote, acknowledge, reward and celebrate quality and excellence across all sectors of the hospitality and tourism industries. The World Travel Awards are universally recognized as the gold standard benchmark for quality, service and excellence in a travel and hospitality experience.
