Ambergris Caye: Belize’s most exciting island

The largest island in Belize, Ambergris Caye is one of the most popular destinations in the country. With a laid-back, Caribbean island approach to life, Ambergris Caye and its capital of San Pedro have something for everyone. The locals are friendly and almost everyone speaks English making the Central American nation of Belize truly a unique destination.

Honeymooners enjoy the island thanks to the gorgeous beaches, stunning views of the Caribbean, candlelit dinners, and a vibrant nightlife. Adventure travelers are drawn to Ambergris Caye due to the many outstanding diving, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, and windsurfing options available. The Belize Barrier Reef is just a few miles from Ambergris Caye and its miles of coral and shallow water passages are home to an abundant array of colorful marine life.

Ambergris Caye is also an excellent family destination. The friendly beach town of San Pedro, the hub of the island’s economic activities, has plenty to see and do. Kids and adults alike also enjoy snorkeling and swimming in the gentle waters offshore as well as paddling around in a kayak or zipping along on a rented jet ski.

Fishing is a popular activity and many tour operators offer half-day and full-day charters that usually include an experienced local captain, equipment, and snacks and drinks. Many visitors get a thrill out of catching their own fish during the day and then having a local chef in one of the island’s restaurants cook and prepare it for dinner.

Many visitors are drawn to the island purely for the delicious food served at the many restaurants and cafes on the island. Beside the fresh-caught seafood, San Pedro is also known for its variety of Belizean cuisine, including chicken dishes, Mexican favorites, and the ubiquitous rice and beans.

Life is casual and relaxed on Ambergris Caye and T-shirts and shorts are the dress code just about everywhere. The most popular form of transportation on the island is golf carts, the perfect choice for a quick trip to the grocery store or a leisurely tour around San Pedro Town.

Located on a private stretch of oceanfront property in San Pedro, the award-winning resort of Banyan Bay offers luxury accommodations. Each spacious villas has two bedrooms and a suite. Selected by TripAdvisor as a Top Hotel in 2016, Banyan Bay offers outstanding customer service, an open-air beachfront bar and one of the best restaurants in all of Belize.

The professional staff at Banyan Bay is more than happy to arrange for golf car rentals, diving, fishing and snorkeling tours, or expeditions to mainland sites of interest.
