Actun Tunichil Muknal

A journey through the famous Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave, known locally as ATM Cave, is a transformative experience, each visitor required to descend deep beneath the earth’s surface, swim across subterranean pools, and climb slippery ledges to arrive at one of the most sacred sites in the Ancient Maya world.

Recently featured on National Geographic as the top sacred cave experience in the world, ATM cave is an entrancing mixture of sparkling stalactites and stalagmites and a rare opportunity to see a sacred site with artifacts and a stone altar that have lain undisturbed for over a thousand years. ATM Cave is home to the “Crystal Maiden”, the skeleton of a sacrificial victim whose bones have merged with the cave’s minerals to take on a glittering shine as well as the remains of 13 other individuals, including five young children whose blood was used to appease Maya gods in a deeply troubled time of drought, famine and war.

The ATM Cave is located approximately 70 miles southwest of Ambergris Caye in Belize’s Cayo District. The journey to the cave begins at the ranger post on the edge of the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. From there, the expedition begins on foot for a 45-minute hike through the jungle to reach the entrance of the cave. After preparing themselves psychologically and spiritually, visitors must then swim across a pool and then slowly make their way down into the bowels of the earth, navigating through an enormous labyrinth to reach the sacred heart of ATM, the ceremonial chamber where hundreds of artifacts and the Crystal Maiden lie.

The journey to explore ATM cave takes approximately three hours, and only parties led by certified guides are allowed to enter this special site. No cameras are permitted into the cave structure but each participant is guaranteed to make memories that will last a lifetime. After exiting the cave, participants will make their way back to the vehicles at the ranger post followed by a picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before returning to Banyan Bay Suites.
